Who we are

Rethink AI is a consulting and product firm built to take organisations from AI curiosity to AI advantage. We don't just advise — we build.

Our anchor work has been with Rethink Group — parent to Rethink Investing, Australia’s largest commercial buyer’s agency, with more than $5.75 billion transacted over a decade in market. The group spans property, finance, legal, insurance, and renewables. We’ve shipped production AI systems now embedded in daily operations across the group, generating measurable business value.

02

Why this role exists

The hard part of building software isn't writing code anymore. It's judgment — choosing the right problem, designing a system that will survive production, catching the edge case before a user does.

We build software for high-stakes industries — property, finance, legal, insurance, education. Environments where getting it wrong is expensive.

We need a builder who treats AI as a collaborator, not just a tool. Who thinks about value first — then product, then architecture, then code. Who sees the difference between software that works and software people love to use — and can't stand shipping the first kind. Who's already building in their spare time because they can't stop.

This is not a first job. You've been a professional developer somewhere real, you've shipped to production, and you've felt the weight of code that other people depend on. Now you want to move faster than a big team will let you.

You'll work directly with our AI Principal Architect, who cares about architecture, craft, and details. You'll leave having shipped production systems in a domain where few have.

03

What you'll ship

  • Features across the full stack, end to end
  • Agentic AI systems that reason over complex business domains and improve through feedback loops
  • Interfaces people love using, not tolerate
  • Software with trackable, measurable business impact

We use a broad range of technology — AWS as the cloud provider, React on the frontend, Python or TypeScript on the backend. Or whatever AI wants to write that day.

04

What you'll get

  • 01

    $90–120k + super

calibrated for an engineer a few years in who's ready to punch above their band.

  • 02

The best tools in the market

whatever helps you ship. Claude, Codex, whatever comes next.

  • 03

    Coaching from an experienced team

real mentorship on architecture, product thinking, and craft, from people who have been in the game for decades.

  • 04

    Room to innovate

we're small enough that your ideas ship in days, we love ideas! Build, learn, iterate.

  • 05

    Visible impact

your code lands in real production workflows. What you build gets used, measured, and iterated.

  • 06

    Career acceleration

direct exposure to founders, clients, and the full business from day one. If your current job has you waiting for tickets, this is the opposite.

05

Role requirements

  • You've worked as a professional developer before — this isn't your first job in software
  • You've built and operated production systems, not just AI-generated demos
  • You decide what to work on rather than waiting for tickets
  • You see engineering as building products, not only writing code
  • You treat UX and design as part of your job
  • You do your best work in a small team without fixed swim lanes
  • Your development process has changed in the last six months
  • You treat security and data integrity as your problem
  • 01

At least 1 year of professional software development employment

A real job where people depended on your code. Internships and university projects don't count.

  • 02

    Full-stack experience from that job

you've worked across frontend, backend, and database, and you've deployed to the cloud. Not tutorials, not demos — systems that ran in production.

  • 03

    Self-direction

you've defined your own work before, not just executed someone else's tickets.

06

What we look for

Evidence that you build. Not because it's your job — because you can't stop. Show us what you've shipped, at work and beyond it. Tell us your AI tool setup and what it's let you do — and be ready to show you can read, debug, and validate code you didn't write. AI-leveraged, not AI-dependent.

Trajectory. What you built six months ago, you'd build differently today. Show us the arc.

The capabilities that actually matter:

  • 01

    Product taste

you know whether something should be built, not just how

  • 02

    UX craft

you see the difference between software that works and software people love. Interfaces, interactions, details. You notice them, and you push back when they’re off.

  • 03

    Architectural judgment

you see how data flows, how things fail, how they scale

  • 04

    Detail and security

edge cases, failure modes, attack surfaces. First, not last.

  • 05

    Tool leverage

you can structure a problem, direct an AI tool, and validate the output

  • 06

    Clarity under ambiguity

you can shape a vague problem into a sensible plan

  • 07

    Ownership

you define your own work and finish what you start

  • 08

    Learning velocity

your practice evolves fast. If it hasn't changed in six months, we're probably not a fit.

07

How we hire

We care about who you are as much as what you've built. Integrity matters. We start with a quick chat to get to know you — what you care about, what you're looking for — before we get into the technical side. When we do, we work through a real problem together with AI tools in the loop, because that's how we build.

Expect:

  • Intro chat
  • Technical conversation
  • Paid pair-build on a real problem
  • Founder conversation

How to apply

Send your resume and a short note about what you’ve built.

No cover letter gymnastics. Attach your resume, a few links to things you’re proud of, and one paragraph on why this role. We read every application and reply within three business days.

If what you’ve built has a UI, share the live link so we can see how it feels — side projects, demos, GitHub, whatever form it takes. Include a short note on what you’re proudest of, what was hard, what you’d do differently, and your current AI tool setup.
